Walter Bailey
 
The Times Republican, Bedford, Iowa, of Jan. 3, 1921: The body of Walter Eshbaugh Bailey who died in France, Oct. 6, 1918, arriced in Bedford, Saturday morning. The body was accompanied by Pvt. C. Bouman of Ft. Crook, Neb, and was met at the depot by the Legion Boys and taken direct to the Wetmore Under-taking parlors.
 

 

Seaman John W. Farley

 

            John W. Farley “Johnnie” was born on February 25, 1899 in Fairfield, Nebraska. He came to Holt County with his parents on March 1, 1906.  As he got older, he held positions in Atkinson. The last one he held was at the post office. While he was at the post office, he enlisted in the Navy on April 26, 1917.

Private William H. Martfeld

 

Private Martfeld was born on October 26, 1889 in Emmet, Nebraska, and moved to Stuart, Nebraska later in his life. His mother, Mary Frances Evan Martfeld, is buried in the O’Neill Cemetery in O’Neill, Nebraska. Private Martfeld is know to have at least one brother, Jessie Martfeld whom died October 30th, 1967, and one sister, Mable Hannah Martfeld Davis, whom is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Atkinson Nebraska.

Corporal Harvey Norton

 

            On February 22, 1894 Harvey E. Norton was born in Gage County, Nebraska. He enlisted to go fight in the war. He left home on April 13, 1917 at the age of 33. He was the first Stuart boy to go to France. Harvey Norton served in the Nebraska Corporal 23rd Infantry 2nd division American Expedition Forces World War 1. 

Private Everett Pendergast

 

            Everett Pendergast was born in 1893 in the Chamber-Ewing area. He married the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brown in 1917. He enlisted in the US Army. 

Bugler Chauncey Porter

 

“Bugler Porter Alone Charged A Machine Gun and Is Cited for Bravery.”

 

            Washington, Nov. 19—The distinguished service cross has been awarded to Bugler Chauncey Porter, Company B. 555th infantry, for extraordinary heroism in action north of Fliery, France/ Sept. 12, 1918. Bugler Porter charged a machine gun alone, with an automated pistol,

Private Roy C. Ross

 

Private Roy C. Ross was born on November 15, 1886 in O’Neill, Nebraska. He was welcomed into the world by his mother Mrs. Susie Ross Sparks and his father Charles C. Ross. Roy had three sisters, Mrs. Nelse Hogsen, Miss. Nette Ross, and Mrs. Bert Warford. He also had three brothers, Ray E. Ross, William V. and Clyde B. Ross.

Private Leo J. Sanders

 

            Leo J. Sanders was born February 22, 1894 in Brady, Nebraska. Leo and his siblings grew up in Ewing, and after the death of their father Martin Sanders, Leo and his brother Sylvester went to work in the family’s grain mill. After work...

Private Claire Waldo Shultz

 

Claire Waldo Shultz was born on January 9th, 1895 in Mount Ayr, Iowa. After his birth his family moved to Nebraska. He lived all around Nebraska in his youth. He lived in O’Neill, Norfolk, and Wayne. Shultz worked as a farmer in Wayne County, Nebraska. He worked alone with no wife or kids. From his draft card we know that he was tall and slender. He had blue eyes and light brown hair.

Private Gaylor Thomas Simonson

 

Gaylor Thomas Simonson was born on August 22, 1895 in O’Neill, Nebraska. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Loren Simonson. He grew up in the Shields Township north of O’Neill and was living there with on a farm when he registered for the military draft on June 5, 1917. 

Private Chas F. Walker

 

Private Charles F. Walker was born on June 13, 1874. His parent’s names were John T. Walker (1828-1899) and Lovina F. Williamson Walker (1839-1894). During Charles childhood he lived in a little town called Middlebranch, Holt Country, Nebraska. Charles had 12 siblings in the house while he was a kid.

Private Howard M. Waters

 

            Private Howard M. Waters was born on May 1, 1889 in Page Center, Iowa to Elvin and Nellie Waters. His family then moved to Atkinson, Nebraska. He attended Agricultural school in Lincoln and then went to work in Wisner. Waters registered for the draft on June 5, 1917 and began serving his country on July 22, 1918.

Private William A. Weibel

 

William A. Weibel was born on September 30, 1893 in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska.  He was the son of William A. Weibel and Elizabeth Dobson Weibel.  He was living in Ewing, Nebraska when he registered for military service on June 5, 1917.

Private Charles F. Wiseman

 

            Charles F. Wiseman was born in Kansas in 1893. His birth year is an estimate based off of the US 1910 census. In 1910 his residence was Ewing, Nebraska. On May 2nd, 1917 Charlie, and his brother Earl, along with Sylvester and Leo Sanders, Ira Napier, and Dewey Wright, left Ewing to join the army together. In “The Frontier” newspaper, on Thursday, July 29th, 1921, Charles F. Wiseman’s name appears as “Charlie”. On May 6th they were enlisted in Omaha and were later sworn in at Fort Logan, Colorado. Soon after they joined Co. K of the 16th Infantry in El Paso, Texas.

Private Dewey Edward Wright

 

            Dewey Edward Wright was born in Nebraska on October 18, 1898 (circa).  Dewey and five other men registered by choice to enter the American War on May 6th. He was ranked as a private in the 16th Infantry Regiment. He left Ewing with five other men on May 2nd, 1917. They arrived in Omaha May 6th and were sworn in at Fort Logan, Colorado at El Paso, Texas.
