Fred Pence

     Fred Pence was born on October 16, 1887 in Nebraska.  He was the son of John W. Pence and Harriet A. Stephenson.  In the  late 1800's and early 1900's he lived in Butte, Nebraska.  Later, he lived and worked in Cedar Butte,  Pennington County, S.D.  He died on pneumonia at Fort Riley, Kansas and is buried in the Butte Cemetery.  His name is one of the seventeen on Boyd County World War I memorial.

     The next bunch of men to go to the army will leave some day next week, the exact time 

 not being known just now.  They are:

      Ralph Lenger,

      Lloyd Spencer,

      Otis Tarr,

      Edward Novak,

      Emra S. Counts,

      Frank O. Lewis,

      Earl Blair,

      Fritz Weibel

      Fred Pence will also go for limited service.  The men will go to Camp Grant, Rockford, Illinois.

     W.H. Pence of Anoka received a telegram Tuesday stating that his brother

Fred was dead at Ft. Riley of pneumonia.

     Fred was inducted into the service September 4th going for special service.

The funeral will be held at the church at Anoka at a time not yet stated.  The service

will be conducted by Rev. W. DeBenham.
