John W. Farley

          John W. Farley “Johnnie” was born on February 25, 1899 in Fairfield, Nebraska. He came to Holt County with his parents on March 1, 1906.  As he got older, he held positions in Atkinson. The last one he held was at the post office. While he was at the post office, he enlisted in the Navy on April 26, 1917.

 

          In the Navy, he made quick advancement. He started as an Apprentice was made second-class sailor at Philadelphia. A little bit later he was advanced to First Class sailor. He made two trips across the Atlantic when he wrote home last on February 15, 1918 saying, “A few lines to mother to say we are leaving again on one of those long tiresome journeys. It will be several weeks before you hear but me, but don’t worry, mother, I am alright.”

        

          John died March 8, 1918 of Pneumonia on board the United States battleship, Seattle, and was buried at sea. When he died, his mother, his five sisters, and his father were still living. His brother Frank and his sister Ada preceded him in death. Today, the Atkinson Legion Post #86, named the Farley-Tushla Post is named after Farley and another man who lost their lives fighting for our freedom.
