Private William H. Martfeld

William H.  Martfeld* was born on October 26, 1889 in Emmet, Nebraska, and moved to Stuart, Nebraska later in his life. His mother, Mary Frances Evan Martfeld, is buried in the O’Neill Cemetery in O’Neill, Nebraska. Private Martfeld is know to have at least one brother, Jessie Martfeld whom died October 30th, 1967, and one sister, Mable Hannah Martfeld Davis, whom is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Atkinson Nebraska.

 

William registered for the draft for the war on June 3, 1917. From his draft card we know that Martfeld was medium hight, medium weight, caucasian , with dark brown eyes and black hair. His draft card also tells us that he was also a single, self employed farmer, and natural born citizen.

 

Martfeld served his country in WWI in the France-Battery 3, 338th Field Artillery, American Expeditionary Forces. While serving Private Martfeld caught a devastating disease, and passed away on October 14,1918. Martfeld was never brought back over seas to be buried, and he is now buried in the Sureness American Cemetery in Suresnes France. His exact plot location is: Plot A Row 4 Grave 31.
