BOYD VETERANS

EMIL ANDERSON

 

Emil Anderson was born in Sweden on June 26th, 1887. He left Sweden for America as a young man. He went first to Oakland, Nebraska and then to Boyd County, Nebraska where he lived with his uncle Peter Thurstenson. He registered for the draft on June 5, 1917.

Private Frank H. Bergstrom

 

Frank H. Bergstrom was born on December 20, 1895 in Monona, Iowa.  His parents were Charles and Jane Bergstrom.  The family moved to Bristow sometime before 1910.  He served in the U.S. Army in World War I.

Sergeant Frank Carroll
 
Frank J. Carroll was the son of Peter F. Carroll and Queen Victoria Jackson Carroll.  He  grew up in Lynch, Nebraska. He served as a Sergeant in the 127th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Division, US Army in World War I.

 

 

Pharmacist Mate Floyd Clute
 
Floyd Clute was born in Madison County, Nebraska, on January 6th, 1892. He lived in Boyd County much of his life, a son of Civil War veteran Charles Clute. He was one of twelve children.

 

 

Private Alfred Londberg
 
Alfred Londberg served in World War I. He was born in Ragan, Nebraska, (Harlan County).

 

 

Private Finn Nelson
 
Private Finn Nelson was born on August 5th 1880 in Wisconsin. He volunteered for military service and was part of the U.S. Army’s 16th infantry.

 

 

Fred Pence  
 
Fred Pence was born on October 16, 1887 in Nebraska.  He was the son of John W. Pence and Harriet A. Stephenson.  In the  late 1800's and early 1900's he lived in Butte, Nebraska.

 

 

Private Rathburn Satterlee
 
Rathburn Satterlee was born on January 8, 1900.  He was the son of Cynthia Satterlee and lived in the Mullen area of Boyd County as a boy.  His family later moved to Iowa.  He served with the U.S. Army during World War I.

 

 

Private Henry Sibbel
 
Private Henry Sibbel was born on March 25, 1892 in Halbur, Iowa. Their family then moved to Boyd County in 1907 to farm after the death of his father. Henry left Butte on May 27, 1918 to join the war. He became a member of the 355th Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, and was fighting 30 days later in France.

 

 

Seaman Karl Schumann
 
Karl Schumann was born on March 20, 1891.  He moved to Boyd County with his parents in 1895 and was farming in South Dakota when the war broke out.  He enlisted in the navy and died of an illness on November 8, 1918.

 

 

Private Richard Stahlecker
 
Private Richard Stahlecker was born September 21, 1893 in Naper Nebraska. He was the son of Josiah and Mary Stahlecker (Stahlikes).  Both of his parents were born in Russia.

 

 

Private Lynn Stockwell
 
Lynn Stockwell was an effective trustworthy soldier. He was born on December 5, 1894 in Nebraska. His parents were James S Stockwell and Amelia M Stockwell. His father was from New York and his mother was from Wisconsin. He had two sisters Ver A Stockwell and Mabel L Stockwell. He was killed in action by shrapnel on November 10,1918.

 

 

Corporal Clarence Eugene Smith
 
Clarence Eugene Smith was born on October 21, 1894 in Dodge County, Nebraska. He was the son of Samuel Smith and Elizabeth Smith. He grew up in  Wayne county and Boyd county. Clarence Smith was working in the Naper area when he registered for the draft on June 5, 1917.  Smith was assigned to Company 42, 11th Battalion, 163rd Depot Brigade and was part of the 88th Division.

 

Arthur Sylvester Thayer
 
Arthur Sylvester Thayer was born on August 3, 1896 near Knoxville in Knox County, Nebraska.  His family moved to the Monowi area of Boyd County when he was a boy.  He entered the U.S. Army in August of 1918.  He served in Company B of the 8th Division.

 

Private William Wadsworth
 
William Wadsworth was born on November 27, 1898. He enlisted in the army in the fall of 1917. He caught the Spanish flu and eventually died of pneumonia in October 31, 1918.

 

Private William Luther Whidden
 
William Luther Whidden was born August 16, 1894 in Madison Nebraska. His parents were James Monroe Whidden (1872-1956) and Rosa Ann Hensley Whidden (1874-1964). He was drafted into World War 1 in 1917-1918 and was a Private 1st class. He died August 14, 1918, later reported as “a death from wounds in service to his country”.

Sergeant Robert LeRoy Wills

 

Robert LeRoy Wills was born December 28, 1893 in Scales Mount, Illinois. Early in his life, his family moved to Butte, Nebraska, which he called home for the rest of his life. His family included parents W.T. Wills and Mary E. Wills and siblings Alice E., Lyman T., William, and Mary Wills. Working as a schoolteacher in Butte, he registered for the draft on June 5, 1917 at the age of 23.

Private Henry Zimmerle

 

Henry Zimmerle was born in Rohrbach, Russia on January 24, 1889. He moved to America with his parents in or about 1900. The family first moved to South Dakota and later to Nebraska. He was farming in South Dakota when he registered for the draft on June 5, 1917. He was one of Gregory County, South Dakota’s quota of soldiers and left for training with the third contingent.
