Dewey Edward Wright

          Dewey Edward Wright was born in Nebraska on October 18, 1898 (circa).  Dewey and five other men registered by choice to enter the United States Army. He was ranked as a private in the 1st Division, 16th Infantry Regiment, Company K.  He left Ewing with five other men on May 2nd, 1917. They arrived in Omaha May 6th and were sworn in at Fort Logan, Colorado.  They entrained at El Paso, Texas and it was there where he was assingned to the 16th Infantry.

Dewey did not die in the war. He died in Sheridan, Wyoming on June 17, 1948. Dewey was the oldest son of Omar K. & Mattie Wright. Dewey was married to Florence Good. Dewey and Florence had one child, Omar K. Wright.

          Dewey Wright was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his extraordinary heroism in battle.  He and two of his comrades were cut off from the rest of the company by enemy. He resisted stoutly until he fell with a rifle shot through both legs and was taken prisoner. Two days later, during advance of our troops, Wright assisted in the capture of the entire enemy in a dugout by calling to the troops and disclosing position.

He returned to the United States after the war.   He died in 1948 and was buried in the Custer Battlefield National Cemetery in Montana. Dewey Wright was a hero to many people.
